Probationary Members

Probationary members are individuals that are over the age of 18 who are not already certified EMTs and looking to start their career in the medical field. Probationary members will be trained thoroughly on how to perform various life saving techniques in a wide variety of situations and environments, beginning with the absolute basics. If accepted, Probationary members will learn how our vehicles operate, how to operate on emergency scenes, and how to provide effective patient care while in a pre-hospital setting. The probationary member will do all of this while operating under a Crew Chief. Probationary members do not have restrictions on what types of emergency calls they are allowed to respond to, however members can limit themselves to the type of calls they take if they are unable to handle such situations so long as their Crew Chief and the Chief of the First Aid Squad is informed.

Probationary members have various responsibilities during their time with the MJFAS, including but not limited to: learning and understanding their role in the 911 system, understanding the anatomy of a patient, communication ability and application of medical care with the use of basic equipment, learning on scene operations for both incidents with a single patient all the way to large scale incidents involving multiple patients with various different agencies. Job functions will include, learning location of equipment, basic radio operations, stretcher operations and progress into a hands on role to include assessment, treatment, and assisting/monitoring in complex emergency responses.

Probationary members will typically remain in this position until they achieve their EMT, or are cleared to become a driver. Probationary members are expected to attend their weekly duty night, monthly Squad business meeting, monthly Squad training, and a rotating Saturday shift. Probationary members are also expected to maintain a valid Healthcare Professional CPR card and First Aid certification during their time on the Monmouth Junction First Aid Squad which we can help members to obtain.

After approximately six months to one year, we will assist our Probationary members in finding an EMT education program that fits their individual needs. During their time in this program not only will we support and assist our Probationary members but they will fine tune their skills they have learned up until this point, including proper patient assessment and medical and traumatic patient treatment.
